Split Hi-Low Hem Tutorial

I`m not the person, who makes resolutions on the beginning of a new year. This year I made one. Sewing related of course. I stopped buying clothes more than 2 years ago. There are a lot of reasons for. First, I want to know, who makes my clothes and to which conditions. Second but not less important point is that our clothes, or the way we buy clothes is eco-unfriendly. That`s why, I decided to stop buying and make it myself. Now, i know exactly who made my clothes and because i made them myself, they bring me so much joy. Pieces i love to wear everyday for hopefully a long time. For 2017 it`s my goal to sew all the stuff, which is really missing in my closet. You know, the stuff you don`t fancy to sew, when there is just an other nice dresspattern on your table. Like sweaters, t-shirts, leggins and underwear. Yes underwear.

To help me to stick at my mission I decided to sew along with Project sew it. I`ll try to sew  a wardrobe stable item for myself or my husband every month. Or even better, for both of us.

January was all about sweaters. Haha, yes. Waffle knit sweaters for Mr. and Mrs. Fliegfederfrei. We`re not going to wear them on the same day, of course.

It`s not the same fabric actually, mine is a Waffle knit from Miss Matatabi. It`s very beautiful with the white reverseside. The one of Mr. Fliegfederfrei is bought locally in Belgium. The cuffs and the detail on the neck are made with the backside of this fabric. Different, but not less beautiful.

You may be interested in the nice split detail I added to my Inari sweater. I made you a Tutorial.

I used the Inari cropped tee pattern by Named. I planned to try out the free long sleeve. With my fabric it didn`t work. The sleeve was really baggy. Maybe because of the weight of the Waffleknit. I seamripped it out again and went for the short sleeve pattern piece which comes with the Inari and just lengthened it to my measurements. Much better. The hemline is extended as described in the tutorial.

Mr. Fliegfederfrei wears a modified Finlayson Sweater by Thread Theory. A size S with extra length. The neckdetail is selfdrafted. Read more about his previous Finlayson Sweater here. He wears his handmade sweaters as soon as they`re out of the laundry. It`s so nice to sew for him.

I really like our new sweaters and I`m quite sure I would probably not have sewn two sweaters without the extra motivation of Project sew it. January was a success.

Mr.Fliegfederfrei

Mr. Fliegfederfrei, normally the man behind the camera, will make his appearance to the blog more often! I`ve a new goal. Call me insane, but I decided not just to sew for my two girls and build my own wardrobe… nope, i`ll start to sew his stock of clothes as well. Mad, isn`t it?

Look at my handsome man. I just love to see him wearing my handmade stuff. It`s like a declaration of his love every single time he wears them. And of course, I can make him clothes that actually fit his athletic tall figure. Win win.

When it comes to menswear I`m a big fan of Thread Theory. If you follow my blog, you probably now that by the time (see more here and here)! They offer great contemporary but still classic silhouettes, that fits an athletic figure. The Jedediah Pants are a slime cut. Slimmer, than i expected them to be. I did`t sew a muslin (i never learn out of my fails) and my first pair were to small around the waistband. By about 5 cm to small (cough cough). Oh, how i hate when that happens! Surprisingly, it was a fast fix! I just replaced the waistband by a bigger one and we were so pleased with the fit. I called it a more than wearable muslin and sewed the next one the same size again just with a bigger waistband.

kurze_hosen__001Those Pants are really beautiful from the inside as well, by the way. I love how they`re finished! The Bias-binding adds a nice touch to the casually rolled-up hem. Both of them are Linen fabrics I bought locally. He loves to wear linen in summer, can`t blame him it`s the perfect fabric for hot days! For the chilly days to come he needs a coat. Woho!

Menswear

With my post baby bump, I just don`t feel like sewing for myself. It doesn`t make a lot of sense, as I hope to lose quite a few kilo`s in the next months. That`s maybe the reason for all the unselfish sewing i`m up to lately. Actually, those sweaters were sewn around christmas time…? I just never came around, to wrap them up to a proper post. Before summer arrives and it `s definitly too late for this post. Here it is.

My Husband is tall and has a slim figure. RTW shirts are either to short or to baggy on him. That`s why sewing for him is so satisfying, you just get the right fit. I decided, to start sewing him a fine wardrobe. Step by step. Thread Theory`s Pattern are a good starting point. They offer a great range of menswear sewing patterns.

This is the Finlayson Sweater. A real staple garment, comfy like a hoodie but with a bit more style, maybe more grown up. The paper pattern is very beautifully wrapped and the design inside is an eye catcher! Instructions are simple and straight forward as I like it. If you need more help, there is a sew along. Well done Thread Theory! I sewed him a size S, lengthened the bodice about 9cm and the sleeves about 6 cm. You see, skinny but tall. The fit is spot on. He made me the best compliment and asked for a second one.

Fabrics are from local shops and were chosen by him. He likes structured blue. I guess i`ll use this pattern over and over again. it`s easy to hack and make him different styled sweaters with a great fit.

And because I was on a run… i sewed him an other one. The pattern is from the german DIY magazine CUT. It`s the `Starschnitt`by Hien Le.

Tom sweater was in the latest issue (01/16). I love the clean but interesting lines of this pattern. It`s easy to sew and a fast make, with the little extra to make it special. It`s a size S again but with a few cm more length. I measured the Finlayson to get it right.

The Fairfield Button-up Shirt and the Jedediah Pants by Thread Theory will be the next things i`m gonna sew for him. Stay tuned for more male sewing.
