Louisa Coat

louisa__013

I always fall in Love with the style lines of a Compagnie M Pattern! Those nicely curved seamlines, which allow you to get creative and make it your own. I can remember Marte telling me once, that she use to draw her curved seams free hand, I guess that`s the secret behind. Her patterns have in common that they carries Martes very own thumbprint. The lines play with the shape, split up and meet again in a very unique way.

louisa__014

Her latest pattern, the Louisa Coat, was such a pleasure to sew! I must say, that I love sewing Coats. It`s a project you can put your heart and soul in. But your little one will wear it for a whole season. Every single day. It will always be the most visible garment. So yes, it`s totally worth to spent the time and make it unique. The Louisa Coat comes with very clear instructions how to sew a Coat. And that includes some handsewing!

louisa__004

Last year I drafted a Coat myself. That was a lot of work and I`m really glad Marte came up with the perfect pattern this year. Without all the drafting, it was kind of fast sewing this year. Kind of. I never cut corners or just rush through projects, i like to do it as good as i can. A wool coat without fabric bound buttonholes? For me, no way. It`s such a nice finish and i enjoy doing them, though.

louisa__003

louisa__005

I bought the wool 3 weeks ago in Italy. In a local fabric shop. When I entered the store i was surrounded by fabricbolts. They piled up left and right. Just leaving a small path to the cash desk. All the beautiful old wooden shelfs that went up until the ceiling where empty. In front of the desk there was an old men sitting. He looked quite surprised, like he wasn`t expecting costumers. I guess he was not able to get up to the shelves anymore and so he just started to pile his bolts where he could reach them. He had the most beautiful wools and linens and… oh it was kind of sad. I`m a bit a messy person myself, but i really felt the urge to clear up that mess. The wool is gorgeous it`s soft and has a nice drape a beautiful color. i knew my girl would love it right away. She does, even if she declared (a week ago) that pink isn`t her favorite color anymore. It`s violet now (can it get any worser?).

louisa__001louisa__002

When she first saw her coat she wanted to wear it immediately. I got hugs and kisses. Needless to say, that I was melting away like ice in the sun. She`s just the sweetest, especially in her pink Louisa.

The buttons are vintage from my stash. I love the subtile contrast they add.

louisa__008

The dress you spot here is a Maradress, also from Compagnie M. Yes it`s Liberty. But I wan`t say more. I`ll blog about that one soon.

louisa__006

Speaking about, how much time I tend to spend on my handmade garments. Yes, the lining is machine-quilted to a warm fleece. That took me a whole evening. Just saying.

The fabric I used for the lining is a upcycled pillowcase and I had to add some glitter as well. The piping is self made, silver and shiny. Yes.

louisa__007

The piping on the outside is self-made as well, from a nice thin gingham wool I bought together with the pink one. It helps to add the little something, so the coat doesn`t look like a cupcake, though.

louisa__009

louisa__011

The doll buggy was her birthday gift from Mr. Fliegfederfrei and I this year. It`s a very old one we found at a thrift store. We restored it with lots of love. And it matches the colors of the  coat perfectly.

Twig and Tale Blogtour

tt-blog-tour-graphic

a__003

Twig and Tale formerly known as BigLittle, invited me to join the Rebranding Party. I sewed quite a lot, be warned it`s a longer post. But who can resist such cute patterns! And there is a GIVE-AWAY on the end of the post, just saying!

a__006

What are Twig and Tale Patterns about, you may ask. I`ll let Lisa describe her imagination.

“It’s a celebration of the innocence of childhood and the wonder of nature. It’s about comfy clothes and warm things like hugs and capes and coats. It’s about handmade, love, and imaginary play—featuring classic, simple patterns that inspire us all to tell a story.”

a__004

Let me tell you my story. When I was asked to participate, I was looking for something that holds my girl toasty and comfy, for the now chilly days. And then, i couldn`t take my eyes off the beautiful vintage dolls. I was sold. I`m a total dollmaking novice. How hard can it be, i thought. If it`s made by needle and thread, i can do it!

a__001

The Briardoll Pattern is exactly what you`re looking for, if you want to dive into dollmaking for the first time. Instructions are so clear and lovely, you can`t go wrong! Lisa will walk you through, step by step!

a__002

It was surprisingly time-consuming to make that little lady! Not the machine-sewing, actually. No, it was the stuffing, the embroidering, sewing on hair and ears… all those little steps in summary. Those lovely dolls are nothing you`ll finish in a rush. But thei`re so enjoyable to make, if you take your time!

Just the doll clothes… that wasn`t my piece of cake! There are lovely dollclothes pattern provided within the bundle, but I didn`t had the patience to sew those itsy-bitsy clothes. I`ll ask my mum if she feels like doing that. Until that happens, she has to  wear the little dress I made her. Matching my girls dress. About that one I`ll talk later.

a__008

The Pathfinder Vest was also on my to sew list. The nice version with the dropped back and the rounded hood. Where is the hood, you may think now… Yes…

ArtGallery kindly sponsored fabric`s for this blogtour. Thanks a lot ArtGallery. You`re fabrics are such a nice quality! I had a very hard time to choose from all those gorgeous prints. And finally, decided on Mustard Stripes for the lining and Denim from their Denim Collection for the outside. When the happy mail with my fabrics arrived, I was kind of disappointed, for a very short moment. The Denim was way to lightweight, for what i intended. It`s the perfect weight for a dress (I`ll have to buy more of that delicious Denim for myself!).

As the Denim was not suitable as main fabric for my Pathfinder vest, I searched through my stash for an other main fabric. I stumbled over that mustard/golden Corduroy. It just had to be that way. I nearly jumped, when I saw how nicely those fabrics match. Only to realise, that my 40 cm scrap (a thrifted leftover piece, i received as a gift) was too small to squish in a hood, no matter how hard i tried.

a__013

Corduroy, a warm batting and the Stripes as a lining. No hood and no dropped back for me…! That`s how it goes sometimes. I had to add a nice little touch to this classic vest instead. Welt Pockets did the trick. My little girl loves her new vest! She even wears it inside the house. I wan`t blaim her, the fabrics are cozy and soft.

a__007a__009

Lets`s talk about her dress! Left was this nice lightweight denim. A dress it had to be! I didn`t search for patterns, as I had an idea in my head and wanted it to look like I imagined. I sat down and drafted myself. A button-up shirt inspired dress with a functional button-stand, rolled-up sleeves, a pleated skirt and an uneven hemline with a facing. Not the fastest solution, but the most satisfying for myself.

a__010

By the way, the dress was perfectly ironed when I left home. But my little princess decided that she needed to sit in the buggy during our daily walk through the forest. That was the result when she stood up to take pictures. Who am I, to complain about wrinkled dresses. Wild and free they shall be!

I guess that`s going to be a go to pattern for myself. I`m pleased with how it fits her so comfortably and still looks pretty with some interesting details. I`m totally in love with hem-facings recently. They`re beautiful and give just the right weight to a dresshem. Next version needs pockets and maybe a Post on it`s own.

a__011

That was my story. Now it`s your turn to make some clothes that give a warm hug to your loved ones. Check out Twig and Tale`s new website and their patterns!

By the way do you spot the photobomb?

About feeling beautiful

dsc_0141-2

dsc_0166

This is the dress, the dress of my dreams. Not less than that! I feel beautiful, strong and kind of dramatic while wearing it. Something probably just a handmade silk dress can do.

dsc_0183

Hours of sewing, went into it and made it even more precious, than the luxury fabrics ever could. All inseams are finished with french seams, all the hems are finished by hand with a rollseam or an invisible stitch. Hours.

dsc_0235dsc_0218dsc_0219dsc_0221

Even if the Trina Pattern probably isn`t a pattern you`ll sew in an evening. It`s really down to the fabrics you choose. The silk organza I used for the back bodice and the sleeves is super flimsy and soft, i had to staystitch every seam. Even from just lifting it from the cutting table some pieces where off about 5cm. Still, so worth the effort. Speaking about the sleeves, i shortened the kimono sleeves to a flutter sleeve. So easy to do. You`ll need much less fabric. I used 0.5m of the Silk organza and 1.5m of the grey Silk. The string is a leftover from my wedding dress.

dsc_0133

I`m totally into that pattern. Kristiann of Victory Patterns is a genius! I was so lucky to get the change to test for her. I highly recommend her patterns! I also made the Hannah Dress and will blog about that one soon. And there will be a more casual Trina in the future for sure.

There is nothing more to say about that dress! It`s perfect, in my eyes.

Mr.Fliegfederfrei

kurze_hosen__004

Mr. Fliegfederfrei, normally the man behind the camera, will make his appearance to the blog more often! I`ve a new goal. Call me insane, but I decided not just to sew for my two girls and build my own wardrobe… nope, i`ll start to sew his stock of clothes as well. Mad, isn`t it?

kurze_hosen__002

Look at my handsome man. I just love to see him wearing my handmade stuff. It`s like a declaration of his love every single time he wears them. And of course, I can make him clothes that actually fit his athletic tall figure. Win win.

kurze_hosen__005

kurze_hosen__006

kurze_hosen__007

When it comes to menswear I`m a big fan of Thread Theory. If you follow my blog, you probably now that by the time (see more here and here)! They offer great contemporary but still classic silhouettes, that fits an athletic figure. The Jedediah Pants are a slime cut. Slimmer, than i expected them to be. I did`t sew a muslin (i never learn out of my fails) and my first pair were to small around the waistband. By about 5 cm to small (cough cough). Oh, how i hate when that happens! Surprisingly, it was a fast fix! I just replaced the waistband by a bigger one and we were so pleased with the fit. I called it a more than wearable muslin and sewed the next one the same size again just with a bigger waistband.

kurze_hosen__001Those Pants are really beautiful from the inside as well, by the way. I love how they`re finished! The Bias-binding adds a nice touch to the casually rolled-up hem. Both of them are Linen fabrics I bought locally. He loves to wear linen in summer, can`t blame him it`s the perfect fabric for hot days! For the chilly days to come he needs a coat. Woho!

Kielo

Kielo__001

Summer rain in the backyard, warm heavy drops in beautiful sunlight. The smell of the ground after a hot and sunny day when the first drops fall down. Nothing to compare!

A light and fluent maxi dress on a day like this, perfect!

Kielo__006Kielo__002

The Kielo Dress by Named Patterns was not love at first sight. It took some time, until I got around, that this could work for me.  Actually, it`s  a genius construct. It has a lot of room, but once it`s tied up, it gives a beautiful silhouette. I felt in love.

Kielo__004

This pattern works for woven or knits fabrics. Just be aware, not to choose a heavy one. I tried and it was not really flattering around the hips. Go for a lightweight fabric with some nice drape and you`ll get a gorgeous maxidress, you dont`t want to take off anymore!

And here we get to the point. How to breastfeed a baby, in a fitted woven dress with a high neckline, without getting undressed in public. Yes you`re right. Not possible.

That`s were my fast sewing project started to get time-consuming. No, not the yoke I added. Let me tell you the story…

The dress was blue and white once. Nice for Summer i thought. At first I tried a buttonplanket, to get rid of the nursing problem. But didn’t like the look. So I cut it out and went for a buttoned yoke instead. Tried it on and felt so disturbed by all the stripes running in different directions cut up by the darts and ties. It was too nervous. No way I got to like it this way. It would have injured my pride to give up and call it a fail. So i thought, maybe it`s better to dye it dark blue and the stripes wouldn`t be so visible anymore.

Im not an expert in dyeing fabric. First try was a complete fail. It was a light baby blue with dark blue stripes. A pain for my eyes. I tried again and as I didn`t now better, declared it as good enough.

A two-hour sewing project that turned out to be hard work.

It was worth it, though.

Get your Groove on

GrooveDress__001

When the Groove dress was introduced for the first time, it went immediately on top of my to sew list. Those dresses are in heavy rotation, since I cut the threads to my machine. I desperately wanted to have a foto shooting together with my mini me. It kind of didn`t happen, that we wore the same dress without one being to dirty to take pictures. Today on our daily walk it was time to get our groove on.

GrooveDress__002

I`m sure you already read all good about this pattern. I wan`t say anything else. It`s a masterpiece. It`s a perfect stapeldress you can easily wear on a dogwalk with some flats or sandals as I do. Or style it up and wear it to a dinner or even a party. Up to you.

You can make one for yourself first, then one for your girls. The teeny version comes for free! My girl is oh so proud to wear the same dress as her mummy. It`s comfortable as a t-shirt worn without pants.

The kids version is a size 3 without any alterations. For my dress, I made it shorter at the hem. I lowered the neckline at the front (to make it nursing friendly) and at the back. I knew, it would affect the fit around the shoulders a bit. I didn`t care. For a next version i wouldn`t lower front and back. The fit would be better. Anyway you have a few nice necklines to choose from, you probably wan`t draw your own.

GrooveDress__006

Fabrics are from a local shop. The fabric I used for mine, is beautiful but not really suitable for that dress, it has`nt enough drape. Doesn`t matter i love it anyway and will do better next time. Madeit you really do a great job!

GrooveDress__007

So when do you get your Groove on?

Pattern: Groove Dress from Madeit Patterns

Fabric: Local shop

There is a pocket

Rollis_Hemd__007

Look there is a pocket. That`s what I usually tell her, when I try to introduce a new dress, i hope she`s gonna like. This one was accepted. Lucky me.

A basic, well-fitting A-line dress, is everything you need to modify it to nearly ever dress you could imagine. I wasn`t that creative with this one. But still, I really like the outcome! My father gifted one of his shirts. As soon as i saw those stripes, i knew how it`s gonna look like. Playing around with stripes is a hobby, it`s just so much fun. The fabric is good quality cotton shirting, lightweight and airy. Perfect for a fast little summer dress. Thank you Dad!

Rollis_Hemd__002

Rollis_Hemd__005

I used the same pattern like here, drafted a new joke and used the cuffs of the original shirt as a belt. What gives the dress some shape around the waistline. The cuffs are already interfaced and i could even reuse the buttonhole and the button, they had just the right length. I love, when my planes work out that well.

The dress is easy to get on and off, as the back has a full button-planket (I didn`t have to sew myself).

And never forget to add a pocket, a dress wouldn`t be complete in her eyes!

Louisa + Giveaway

Nella__002

A princess seam dress isn`t something, you gonna sew for yourself while having a big baby bump, right? I really felt the urge, to sew the Louisa for Women, when it was released last fall. But don`t worry, I stayed down-to-earth and didin`t sew one for myself. Instead, it happened that my mum`s Birthday was just around that time… that`s how it came, that she has a Louisa by now. It was my Birthday present for her.

Nella__006

I initially planned to sew a winter version with 3/4 sleeves, but with summer just around the corner (you see how long it took me to finish this dress), I decided to skip them. The dress is fully lined in the same shade of the rosa like the flowers. Because it is a gift and should be something special, i went for all the nice (and time-consuming) finishing touches, everything is under-stitched, the hem is hand-sewn i added sideseam pockets and so on. I hope she`ll love this dress for a long time. I really loved to sew it, it`s beautifully drafted!

Nella__003Nella__001

Mum picked the Naniiro, on the middle panel, out of my stash. The color, really suits her well, don`t you think? As you can`t patternmatch princess seams, I was worried the print will be really nervous splinted up by the seamlines. I suggested, to combine it with the beautiful Fuwari Naniiro. I love to touch this brushed cotton, it`s so soft, amazing to work with!

Nella__005

My mum has a small frame. I sewed a size 32 and still had to take in 1.5 cm at the sideseam around the bust. I shortened the dress about 8cm to her preferred length. No other changes were necessary. In my eyes, the fit is perfect. She seems to feel good in her new dress and i feel good every time she chooses to wear it.

Nella__004

To make you feel good, I`m going to Give-away one gorgeous Paperpattern of the Louisadress for women by Compagnie-M. Just leave me a nice Comment how you feel about sewing for loved ones. I`ll randomly choose a winner next Monday 20/6/16. International entries are very welcome!

Pattern: Louisadress for Women by Compagnie-M

Fabric: Naniiro brushed Cotton, purchased at Miss Matatabi.

Menswear

DSC_5610

With my post baby bump, I just don`t feel like sewing for myself. It doesn`t make a lot of sense, as I hope to lose quite a few kilo`s in the next months. That`s maybe the reason for all the unselfish sewing i`m up to lately. Actually, those sweaters were sewn around christmas time…? I just never came around, to wrap them up to a proper post. Before summer arrives and it `s definitly too late for this post. Here it is.

My Husband is tall and has a slim figure. RTW shirts are either to short or to baggy on him. That`s why sewing for him is so satisfying, you just get the right fit. I decided, to start sewing him a fine wardrobe. Step by step. Thread Theory`s Pattern are a good starting point. They offer a great range of menswear sewing patterns.

This is the Finlayson Sweater. A real staple garment, comfy like a hoodie but with a bit more style, maybe more grown up. The paper pattern is very beautifully wrapped and the design inside is an eye catcher! Instructions are simple and straight forward as I like it. If you need more help, there is a sew along. Well done Thread Theory! I sewed him a size S, lengthened the bodice about 9cm and the sleeves about 6 cm. You see, skinny but tall. The fit is spot on. He made me the best compliment and asked for a second one.

DSC_5640DSC_5645

Fabrics are from local shops and were chosen by him. He likes structured blue. I guess i`ll use this pattern over and over again. it`s easy to hack and make him different styled sweaters with a great fit.

And because I was on a run… i sewed him an other one. The pattern is from the german DIY magazine CUT. It`s the `Starschnitt`by Hien Le.

Tom sweater was in the latest issue (01/16). I love the clean but interesting lines of this pattern. It`s easy to sew and a fast make, with the little extra to make it special. It`s a size S again but with a few cm more length. I measured the Finlayson to get it right.

The Fairfield Button-up Shirt and the Jedediah Pants by Thread Theory will be the next things i`m gonna sew for him. Stay tuned for more male sewing.

Soft Wrinkles

a__001

A new favorite dress. For both of us. That`s rare. Here it is. A simple A-Line Dress from the Japanese sewing book, Sew for your Girls. A loose fit, in a nice and soft linen from Miss Matatabi, with a functional button-placket and a sailor collar. Not to forget the pocket. And the magic happens.

a__003

All the fabrics in this picture are linen. Don`t you love, how linen looks so soft and wrinkles in the most beautiful way. I do.

a__005

The pattern is a size 3y without any modifications. It`s perfect and will fit for a longer time. The instructions are easy-to-follow and the pattern is very versatile. I already made a little hack which is coming to the blog soon. If you follow me on IG (@fliegfederfrei),  you previously got a sneak peek of my  upcycling dress.

a__008

The buttons were a gift I received from a good friend. A box full of vintage buttons. Can you get a better gift as a seamstress? I love to sew those buttons on my projects, it feels so special and reminds me of good times we shared. Thank you Marte!
