Baptism Dress for a Boy

Image

No, I don`t have a baby boy. And as I`m not religious, it`s neither my celebration. It`s for a very close friend of mine. Her baby boy, is going to have his christening ceremony the coming weekend. She just couldn`t find the right dress for him, in the end she asked me, if I would sew one for him. And of course, I just jumped at the occasion. For her and her family, it`s a special and important day. And it`s me, who`s going to sew up his dress. I felt so honored. I tried hard do give my best. I searched, a suitable pattern, for long time. Just to realise that there isn`t anything, like we wanted it to be. Finally, I drafted the pattern by myself. I made a muslin first, I rarely do so. But this time it was important enough, to spend some extra hours.

Image

We were looking for a traditional dress, suitable for a boy. She prefered an overall, rather than a skirt. Not too much decoration, but still very festive.

Image

I found a vintage lace stripe at a brokers`row, a week ago. I really like it. It`s so subtle and looks classic. It was kind of endless handsewing fun to attach the lace to the bodice. I think I didn`t had a project like this before, I had to use a thimble, my fingers get sore. But it was totally worth it. I think all the handsewing, who comes with such a dress, is exactly, what makes it so precious.

I used a very thin cotton Baptist. This fabric is amazing! My mother became it as a gift from an old lady, who worked as a tailor, and stored it for a long time. But, it`s still in an excellent condition! She passed it on to me, thank you mum! It`s so lightweight, I had to line it with a second Baptist who`s a bit firmer. Still the drape of the dress is like a cloud of fabric. I like! But it wasn`t that easy, to insert the invisible zipper. I couldn`t sew it between the two layers, the fabric wasn`t staedy enough. So I just attached it to both layers instead, and sewed a facing. Yes of course, by hand.

Image

In my big zeal, no dress is complete, without the matching shoes. Here they areImage

Made of the softest Nappa leather, with some air-condition for the hopefully hot summer day. I drafted the pattern myself. As the leather is so soft, i didn`t had to line them.  It was a very quick sew, compared to the dress.

Pictures of the sweet little boy in his robe will follow the next week.

Sunny Day Shorts second issue

Image

As I told you, I couldn`t resist. I sewed up a second pair of sunny day shorts by Oliver+S. If you missed my first one, have a look here. I made a few alteration to the very basic shorts pattern. You can really personalize this pattern. Last time, I haven`t been totally satisfied by the result. The shorts where a little to big. So this time I made them smaller. Again, I attached a buttonhole elastic, so it`s easy to adjust the exact size of the waist. And now, they fit well.

Image

My favorite thing, to sew for her, are definitely dresses. So she`s still a bit short on summer shorts. But I`ve to wait at least a week until I`m gonna sew my next pair. All this topstitching…

Image

I used a neon colored thread. So you can see every wonky seam straightaway. It was late at night, I allways forget the time once sitting on my machine. So, they`re a few wonky stitches. But I like the pop of color it adds to the cotton flannel.

Image

That`s my second welt pocket. And now, I know how to name it. Thanks to my readers!

Image

Today it was way to cold outside. So we played inside with her phone. I do not really know if she understands what it should be. Doesn`t look like my cell phone.

Melon Dress

Image

When I look at this dress, I have to think of a melon. It`s maybe the color and the shape. She looks good enough to eat in this dress.

A few days ago I came across this very lightweights solids in my local fabric store. They were in sale. So I just had to buy them. Even if I wasn`t totally sure about. I rarely sew with solids. But when I look at this dress. I have to chance this habitude!

Image

It`s my first ever, bubble dress. the pattern is self drafted. It isn`t hard to do. And it gives such a nice finish, al seams are hidden inside the dress. I lined the whole dress with the orange fabric of the bodice. Since the fabric is so lightweight the dress is very airy. I think she`s totally comfortable in it.

At the moment, i`m totally in the mood of sewing summer cloths for my little bean. I went fabric shopping yesterday. I`ve got a few brand new fabrics in my stash now. Can`t wait to use them.

Sunny Day Shorts

Image

Since summer is finally arrived, my little bean was in need of shorts. Time to try out the Sunny day shorts by Oliver + S Patterns. It`s a free pattern for basic shorts. Exactly what I was looking for, it`s so easy to customize. You can alter the pattern to whatever your heart desires. That`s what I did. I altered the pattern quite a lot.

ImageImage

I added side pockets, and a tinny back pocket. I`m pround of the back pocket! It was my first time to sew one of this kind (does anybody know how they`re called?).  It looks like I`ve allined the stripes, but let me tell you, that’s just a happy coincidence! Anyway, back to the pattern chances. I added a front closure and i shortened the legs. I sewed the shorts a little bit bigger, than my girls size. So she can wear them the whole summer.

ImageImage

As you can see in the pictures I attached a buttonhole elastic to adjust the pants to her waist. She`s growing so fast.

Image

So that`s why, the waistband is so wavy at the moment. Since I made them bigger, I had to tighten the elastic quite a bit.

Image

The camomile plant has just the same color like the yellow of her pockets inside. And the poppy`s the same shade of red as the button. That`s luck, isn`t it? And yes, the button is the same i already used here. I still have a few of them in my stash.

The fabric is taken from an old shirt. Are you already tired of my upcycles? And the yellow one is a cotton i bought locally. I love the fresh kick, yellow give`s to summer clothing.

She seems to like her new pants, and I like them as well. I`m sure that wasn`t the last time that I used this pattern. Maybe I`ll make them smaller next time.

Dad`s button down

Image

My dad, donated his old button down. He wasn`t just happy about the deal. He expressly underlined that he still wears this, at least once a year. But, hey dad, look at that. Isn`t it darling? I think he`ll be pleased with the new utilization.

Image

I like it from the back view. I went for ruffles. If you know me better, you`re conscious that, it isn`t really my thing. But, when it comes to ruffles, I like them big. Because baby`s skin is so sensitive, I needed something to cover up her shoulders. And it adds an extra pop of color.

The straps are ending in a bow, looks special, but it`s so easy to do!

Because I love to refashion old stuff and I think it is important to go easy on resources. I wanna show you, how to do it yourself. It`s quite easy. And it`s simple to make it your own. ImageImage

I think everybody has a disused shirt. It`s so fun to reanimate it for your little one.

Upcycling an old button down to a baby suit

Image

It`s summer, isn`t that wonderful? How I missed it. Today, my little bean, enjoyed playing with  the cold wather in her new suit. It`s made from an old button down, her grandmother didn`t use anymore. Upcycling old clothing, is a nice way for me to recycle fabric. It`s cheap and economical. And you can integrate details from the old piece, into the design of the new one. Like I did with the button facing.

The Pattern is self drafted. The neckline is made from a rectangle, I used the stripes as a guide for my pleating, super easy to do and it looks sweet.

Image

To add some shape, I went for an elastic casing. In my eye`s it gives the suit some vintage feeling. For easy diaper chancing, I attached snaps, as I always do, there isn`t anything more practical.

Image

Image

The big red button, is a vintage one from my stash, a perfect match. I love it, when I`ve got exactly the right thing around. I don`t know, how is it about you, but I really need a creative chaos in my sewing space. I like it, to have all this inspiring stuff around me.

Image

If you live around my line of latitude, enjoy the summer!

Nautical equipment

ImageAs I already told you, you`ll see a lot of rompers around here. Are you already tired of it? I`m not. It`s kind of an obsession. This one is made from a lillestoff knit. And some local bought polka dot fabric. I love sewing with knit`s since i`ve got a serger, it`s so easy to get a nice and clean result. And for a kiddo it`s just so comfortable.

ImageThe pattern is, as usual for my rompers, self drafted. I`ve a lot of fun playing around with different designs. This time a made a crossed strap in the back and just to add some cuteness, I drafted a tiny knot. I inserted the elastic with my (new) coverlock machine. It took my years to work it out, just couldn`t find the right setting. In the end i`m quite content with the result. It`s not perfect but it look`s nice. I hope i`ll get the hang of this machine someday. May you`ve any tips for me?

ImageToday was one of the first summer days here (we don`t get too many of them every year, here in switzerland). So it was the perfect thing to wear. Love to dress her in my handmade clothes. They`re made with so much love, just for her.

Image

ImageThe cap she`s wearing is 25 years old. Even if it`s from Walt Disney, I love it.

ImageA beautiful, sunny day on the gorgeous lake, in a nice, selfmade romper, is there anything better?

Gingham double gauze dress

Image

Last sunday I found a very nice mans scarf at the flea market. It immediately jumped at my eyes, I just had to buy it. I knew from the first minute what I wanna do with it. Back home, I started sewing. The dress, which inspired me is sewn by Tasha from Glitter and Wit. I used my own pattern for the bodice. I`ve allready used it here. The skirt is a rectangle, I used the whole rest of the scarf, then I gathered the waistline.

Image

The fabric is delicious! It`s a double gauze gingham, it`s so soft! I added some self made piping. I like the glamour it adds to the dress.

Image

For the closure I attached some vintage sewing snaps. I sewed them on the lower flap, so they`re not visible from the outside. I love to shop at flea markets and secondhand shops, for vintage sewing stuff. You got special things, you would`t find anywhere else. And at least, you don`t pay much for it. I treasure such goodies!

Image

ImageThere is always something new to discover in our garden. Oh, it`s so beautiful at the moment.

Image

The gorgeous hoodscarf, is 100% Kashmir, it`s the softest you can imagine. We received it as a gift from a good Nepali Friend. Thanks again! It`s really something special!

Image

The trolley was mine when I was in her age, my mum kept it for me. Isn`t it darling?

Image

I`m trilled, how it turned out. It`s totally my style. Sweet, but not just sweet. You know what I mean?

Upcycled canvas tote bag

ImageFinally, I sewed for my boyfriend. It`s his birthday gift (from a year ago, oops). I just promised, to do it soon all the time. And then, when it comes to my rarely sewing time, I always found something else to do first. For my apology, it can be said that it was a year full of major chance, I became a mother, we got a baby dog and we moved to a house. Just to mention a few. Anyway, he got his tote. The pattern is drafted by me. I sewed it up after his requirements. He`s a photographer, so it`s necessary to have room for his camera (at least the small one for the daily use). And from time to time, his laptop, a book, something to eat, a separate place for his phone and some pens. That`s it.
And that, was a lot for me to think about. It`s my really first bag pattern. So it wasn`t a breeze for me to work it out. It`s made from an old military tent canvas. It`s nice to sew with it and it has a good wight for a project like this.

ImageThere are some big patch pockets in the front. So he can stuff something small in, without opening the whole bag. ImageIf he opens the bag, he got some extra space. The lining is in a contrasting bright yellow, so it`s easy to see the things inside.ImageHave a look inside. It`s quite roomy. I made a separate laptop pocket, it`s well feed so the laptop won`t broke. I added a little tag with my feather and a tiny heart. Everytime, when he opens his bag, he`ll be reminded that I love him. ImageImageThere is a secret pocket on the back, made for stuff like keys or money.ImageMy love is happy with his new bag. And until now, there aren`t any complaints. Whats about you, did you ever made your own bag pattern? What does make a bag to your favorite one?
